Removing the boards meant I could stick my head out through the roof to look at the damaged area and see how extensive it was. It could have been worse. The beams look bad but were actually fairly solid.

The far side of the roof was spared the attentions of the previous owners so was in fine shape. Annoyingly so was the roofing they took off on that side, it just wasn't worth attempting to keep when they were doing the rest. (It had another 2-5 years of lifespan and the roofers wouldn't warrantee any of it if they did a partial job).

This is the part that actually keeps most of the water out. The lower edge is a different colour as it's an ice shield as well.

Wow, it sure looks like more fun when somebody else is doing the work!
I put a light tube like that in my hallway and love it. I'm going to put another in the bathroom when I get around to that part of the renovation.
It's also much faster when you know what you are doing and have the right tools for the job. Watching them work there's nothing I couldn't have done - without a month to do it in and around $500 worth of tools I don't have. That more than covers the cost of labour, and they were done in a day (and importantly the whole thing is warrantied against any problems).
After the tubes were in, I was already wishing I'd been able to afford more of them.
You can add them later with only minimal disturbance to the roof. I added mine after the roof was done and will do the next tube a year after the roof was done. Anybody who has done roofing could do the roof cut-out and re-shingling in an hour or so.
To keep the warrantee on the roof I'd need to get the same company to add them. So that adds to the cost of having them put in.
Given the cost of the repairs so far, I don't want to mess with the warrantee.
